Globally responsible leadership inquiry Paris

During 2004/5, Oasis took part in a jointly-sponsored United Nations Global Compact/European Foundation for Management Development inquiry into globally responsible leadership with senior representatives from 22 global partners – companies, business schools and centres for leadership learning across five continents.

Following the successful completion of the year-long inquiry and the publication of its report, in 2006 Oasis became a founding partner organisation of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative General Assembly and a member of the board of the resulting Foundation.

The GRLI works internationally to influence the emerging responsible leadership agenda and promote the practice of globally responsible leadership. Action targets include:

  • making global responsibility a foundational requirement within business schools
  • piloting new approaches to learning within leading business schools and companies
  • developing self assessment tools for individual and corporate performance
  • advocacy to enable globally responsible leaders to flourish and become role models.

“It is our aim to establish the norms and expectations of business behaviour for the 21st century and ensure that the emerging generation of business leaders live by them. It is about the need to overhaul business education worldwide to provide a foundation of global responsibility in every area of learning,” says Anders Aspling, efmd board member and chair of the Initiative.

Oasis is committed to the development of the initiative both in the UK and internationally.

Oasis Contribution

Oasis brings 25 years of experience in organisations; developing leaders, managers, change agents and facilitators with a sustained focus on leadership and dialogue in practice.

Together with a commitment to developing active planetary citizenship and offering transformative approaches through Whole Person Learning, we continue to engage in the personal and systemic issues our local and global work represents.

The initiative is addressing the substantial changes required in the way business schools prepare the next generation of leaders.

Early on it was recognised that engendering global responsibility within leaders requires a much broader approach to learning, beyond the cognitive acquisition of knowledge. This approach is Whole Person Learning.

Collaborative Inquiry, using a Whole Person Learning approach, is a method that suits the times with the questions that it raises stretching understanding and deepening practice. It is an approach that mirrors the call for more innovative approaches to learning.

“… a range of innovative approaches to pedagogy and learning needs to be tested and utilised which engage more of the whole person in the learning experience.”

Globally Responsible Leadership: A Call to Engagement, EFMD Report, 2005

The third General Assembly of the GRLI was hosted by Oasis in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University.

Nick Ellerby now acts as a Senior Advisor to the GRLI.

“Globally responsible leadership is the global exercise of ethical, values-based leadership in the pursuit of economic and societal progress and sustainable development. It is based on the fundamental recognition of the interconnectedness of the world.”
